Entry Requirements

What qualifications do you need?

We welcome Scottish and UK students and consider all applicants on an individual basis.

Please visit our Undergraduate Entry Requirements page for information on our different entry requirements, including country-specific details for EU and non-EU qualifications.

All applicants must satisfy the entry requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council including evidence of literacy and numeracy for entry to pre-registration nursing and midwifery programmes (NMC Circular 03/2008, revised 2010 Standards). All applicants will need to demonstrate this with acceptable qualification awards in both English and Maths.

Year 1

Scottish Highers*:
- Standard Entry Requirements: BBBC (102 UCAS Tariff points) including English at C or above, plus National 5 Maths/Applications of Maths/Lifeskills Maths at Grade C or equivalent
- Minimum Entry Requirements: BBCC (96 UCAS Tariff points) including English at C or above, plus National 5 Maths/Applications of Maths/Lifeskills Maths at Grade C or equivalent
A Levels: BCC (104 UCAS Tariff Points) plus GCSE Maths at Grade C/5 or above and GCSE English Language AND English Literature at 5/C or above.
T Levels: Full T Level with Grade M (120 Tariff points) which includes English, plus GCSE Maths at Grade C/5 or above and GCSE English Language AND English Literature at 5/C or above.
Irish Leaving Certificate: H2H3H3H3 including English, plus Maths at Ordinary Level Grade O5
International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma: 27 points, including English at Higher level. Maths required as part of International Baccalaureate
SQA HNC / BTEC Level 4 HNC: Any HNC will be considered (although Health or Science-related subject preferred) PLUS Higher English at minimum Grade C AND National 5 Maths Grade C or above.
SQA NextGen HNC: Healthcare Practice PLUS Higher English Grade C and National 5 Maths Grade C
SQA HND / BTEC Level 5 HND: Any HND will be considered (although Health or Science-related subject preferred) AND National 5 Maths Grade C or above.
Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC) / QQI: Complete and pass FETAC Level 5 with 5 modules at distinction, PLUS Leaving Cert English at H3, and Maths at O5
Scottish Wider Access Programme: Access to Allied Health Professions (UHI only) (Grades ABB), plus SQA Nat 5 Maths or University of Aberdeen's Access to Maths (SCQF Level 5)

There is no Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) onto the BSc Midwifery. Students must undertake all three years of the programme to gain entry onto the Nursing and Midwifery Council register as a Midwife.

Access to the programme is dependent on Occupational Health, Protecting Vulnerable Group and Moving & Handling clearance. Failure to attend an occupational health appointment and moving & handling training on two occasions, without prior notice, may result in you being required to pay an administration fee of 拢60 to cover the cost of non-attendance. Not attending costs the University approximately 拢120 per appointment. In addition, not completing the Protecting Vulnerable Group (PVG) application on two occasions may result in you being required to pay the cost to complete the application, you can find a note of the current cost at

English Language Requirements

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS OVERVIEW

All academic degrees/awards at 51视频 are taught in English. For applicants whose first language is not English*, the University sets a minimum English language proficiency level. All English language qualifications must have been gained within two years of the start of your 51视频 course.

* applicants who are exempt from English language requirements include:

native speakers of English
Erasmus students (unless advised otherwise)
non-Erasmus students from EU partner institutions (your institution must provide confirmation of your English language ability in the absence of a formal qualification)
students whose previous degree-level study has been taught and assessed in English in what UK Visas and Imigration (UKVI) define as a majority English speaking country

In general terms, if you are applying to study a course at, or above, Year 1 (SCQF Level 7) bachelor鈥檚 degree level, then the UKVI鈥檚 minimum level of English proficiency is Common European Framework for References of Languages (CEFR) at B2 (Upper Intermediate).

51视频 & INTERNATIONAL ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEST SYSTEM (IELTS)

At 51视频, we define our general English language requirements using the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic module (not General Training) as follows:

Undergraduate (bachelor's - BA, BAcc, BEng, BSc etc.) degrees and postgraduate (master's - MA, MBA, MSc etc.) taught degrees

the CEFR equivalent requirement is normally an overall IELTS score of 6.0 (or equivalent), with a score of no lower than 5.5 in any of the four elements (listening, speaking, reading and writing)

Postgraduate research degrees (MRes, MPhil, PhD, DBA etc.)

the CEFR equivalent requirement is an overall IELTS score of 6.5 (or equivalent), with a score of no lower than 6.0 in any of the four elements (listening, speaking, reading and writing)

These are minimum requirements and some courses may require a higher standard for admission鈥�.

鈥� Exceptions to this level of IELTS scoring exist for some accredited or professionally-recognised courses (see IELTS Score Exceptions section below for more information).

IELTS SCORE EXCEPTIONS (RESEARCH DEGREES, BIOMEDICAL & PARAMEDIC SCIENCE DEGREES, MIDWIFERY DEGREES WITH NMC REGISTRATION, SOCIAL WORK DEGREES, CERTIFICATE OF HIGHER EDUCATION, ETC.)

RESEARCH DEGREES

For our research degrees (MRes, MPhil, PhD, DBA, DProf) applicants are required to have an IELTS score as follows:

overall score of 6.5
no sub-test score of less than 6.0

MIDWIFERY AWARDS

For Midwifery courses that lead to professional registration with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (BSc Midwifery), applicants are required to have an IELTS score as follows:

overall score of 7.0
score of at least 7.0 in reading, listening and speaking and
score of at least 6.5 in writing

PARAMEDIC SCIENCE DEGREE

Our BSc Paramedic Science degree leads to professional registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC); it has different IELTS requirements than other Health-related courses. Although it is not possible to apply for this degree directly as an international student, for applicants who meet and for whom English is not their first language, then the following IELTS scores are required:

overall score of 7.0
no sub-test score of less than 6.5

BIOMEDICAL DEGREES

For our BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science and MSc Advanced Biomedical Science degrees, which may lead to professional registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), applicants are required to have an IELTS score as follows:

overall score of 7.0
no sub-test score of less than 6.5

SOCIAL WORK DEGREES

Our BA (Hons) Social Work and MSc Social Work degrees are professionally recognised by the Scottish Social Services Council and applicants are required to have an IELTS score as follows:

overall score of 7.0
no sub-test score of less than 7.0

CERTIFICATE OF HIGHER EDUCATION

For our Certificate of Higher Education courses, applicants are required to have an IELTS score as follows:

overall score of 5.0
no sub-test less than 4.5

OTHER IELTS EQUIVALENT ENGLISH LANGUAGE TESTS

In additional to IELTS, we also accept a number of alternative English language for application and admission to our courses for both home/EU and international students at bachelor's degree study at Year 3 (SCQF Level 9), and above. From Cambridge to TOFEL iBT qualifications the number of these qualifications is extensive.

Applicants who do not meet the minimum English language requirements have the option to study one of our preparatory and pre-sessional English courses. 51视频 courses available are:

8-week pre-sessional Enlish Language Online Course - entry criteria UKVI IELTS 5.0 with no no element below 4.5
5-week pre-sessional Enlish Language Online Course - entry criteria UKVI IELTS 5.5 with with only one component at 5.0
English Language for University Study - entry criteria UKVI IELTS with an overall score of 4.0, plus a score of 4.0 in all sub-tests (10-month course), or an overall score of 4.5, plus no score below 4.0 in all sub-tests (7-month course).

Course details

The BSc Midwifery will prepare you for a professional career in midwifery. Over three years you will develop knowledge, skills and practical experience to become a Registered Midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) upon graduation. It will also foster an interest in continuous professional development and the importance of keeping your knowledge and skills up-to-date and in line with current best practice.

Year 1

In year 1 you will receive a broad introduction to midwifery, learn about health and public health concepts, parenthood issues and the role of the professional midwife. You will develop knowledge and clinical practice through modules in life sciences, caring skills, professional skills and personal development.听 You will also spend time on placement.听

Year 2

In year 2 you will study midwifery practice, and learn about the risk factors 鈥� medical, obstetric and social issues 鈥� associated with pregnancy. You will also study critical care, and care of the听newborn听and spend time on placement.听听

Year 3

In Year 3, you鈥檒l continue to advance your knowledge, decision-making, and practical skills. You鈥檒l also demonstrate the professional standards required for registration as a Registered Midwife.

This year focuses on building independence and critical thinking, while exploring research, quality improvement, and holistic midwifery practice.

BURSARY OPPORTUNITIES

Paramedic, Nursing and Midwifery Student Bursary Scheme (PNMSB)

If you are ordinarily resident in Scotland, you may be eligible to receive 拢10,000 worth of funding in each of the first three years of your BSc programme, and 拢7,500 if you study an honours year, for tuition and living costs. This funding is available through the Paramedic, Nursing and Midwifery student bursary scheme (PNMSB) which comes from the Scottish Government Health Directorate but is administered by the Student Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS).
